i have a 40" mes that i love. what type of insulation is used in these? and are most insulations fire proof? i was looking at maybe using sometype of insulation to add to gosm that i'm working on and was curious as to if there is a specific type that won't melt or burn. any help wold be great thanks.

I would imagine that most fiberglass insulation would be ok at temperatures we use in smokers. May not stand up to direct flame, but in the walls of a smoker I'd think it should be fine. I built an insulated cover for my lil' chief smoker with regular old 'glass insulation sandwiched between two pieces of thin plywood. Never had any problems with it.

I insulated the chamber in my homebuilt with fiberglass. Fiberglass is good to 1000F max, so using under 800F continuous is ok if you keep it dry. The gravity feed firebox I added got wrapped in mineral wool. Mineral wool is good to 2000F+ max and can be used at 1200F continuous. The MES uses a foam insulation good for under 300F.

Yeah, I agree.
In an electric smoker, regular fiberglass will take the heat just fine.
And you'll save a ton of money vs. the fancy stuff.

But if you don't mind the price, Roxul mineral wool panels are great and have better r-values than the kiln blankets.

thanks guys i'm gonna check on these options,i hope to have this lil smoker up and running here shortly.
