My first smoke since I modified my vertical propane smoker went well.  I’m sure someone else has tried this, but I haven’t seen one yet.  I wasn’t happy with the smoke from the cast iron frying pan with the little chunks of wood, so I came up with this.  I found a $20 grill at Fred’s.  Cut an opening in the side where my vent is and bolted it to the side of the Masterbuilt.  Now I smoke with charcoal, chunks, and sticks.  I have a few leaks that I plan to stop later.  I still had to run the gas as low as it would go, but the temp. stayed between 225 and 240 on a pork butt.  This could be a little more dangerous than having the smoldering wood just above the flames so I stayed in the house most of the time.  Besides, it’s cooler in here.  But, nothing blew up. If this continues to work this good, I’ll get a better grill after the 4[sup]th[/sup].  If it doesn’t continue to work well, I only have a ¼” hole to patch the propane smoker.

I like your mod.  It's good to have the best of both worlds.  I can smoke using logs, chunks, pellets, or charcoal alone for low temps, and add gas if I need higher temps.  So far, I'm happy with the way it smokes.  I haven't seen anything anything like it for sell.  There may be some out there, but I'm sure they would cost more than what I have in this one.  I don't count my labor, 'cause I work cheap for myself.  Sounds like you're happy with yours as well.  Keep on smokin.
