Hello,

I am new to this forum and smoking. After researching the ones available in my area, I decided on a Master Forge Double Door. It was not available in any of the 5 Lowe's stores within 20 miles, but I did find a store that had them 45 minutes away. I also purchased the rope gasket needed to help seal the doors better. I had heard I should purchase 3/8", but the Lowe's guy recommended the 5/8". I ended up getting the 5/8" even though I was doubtful. After reading more when I got home, I decided to go to my local Lowe's store and exchange for the 3/8". Well guess what? They don't carry it. Neither does Home Depot or any other type store in my area. While I can order it, I was anxious to get it all ready tonight to try out tomorrow. My question is, can I use the 5/8" or should I wait and get what it seems everyone uses? I don't want to make some huge mistake
before I even try it out. Thanks for your help.

You can skip the rope gasket and just lay a bead of high temp sealant if you like. It is made by Rutland's for ovens and stoves so it will be safe for your smoker. After laying the bead of sealant cover with Saran Wrap and close the doors over night for the sealant to dry. Closing the doors should form a perfect gasket for your doors. Oh ya, and welcome to SMF... great to have you here!

I couldn't get the rope gasket locally either so I was in Ace Hardware and they sell a replacement felt gasket for The Big Green Egg. I put it on both the door side and the smoker side and it works great. Just make sure it is clean,  peel the plastic off the back and stick it on.
