Anyone out there that has a Maid-Rite hamburger recipe? Had these growing up in Indiana. For those that don’t know what maid-rites are….they are basically a sloppy joe without the tomato sauce. Sometimes called “loose meat”.
I searched the forum. I found one that is really simple. Just curious if that is the real deal to original.

Thanks

Had my first "maid-rite" in May in IA. It was very good. The Nebraska version is called a "Tastee" Here is a recipe that I found. I have not tried this recipe, but there are similar recipes is in old church cook books around here.

Tried Made-Rite years ago in Iowa when I used to work down there all the time, our older crew chief always talked about how good they were. Don't remember anything outstanding and never ate at one again, kind of a good thing we paid with our per diem versus out of our own pocket. If I had to guess all you do is take cheap ground beef, cook it in a pan and break it up like you would for taco, sloppy joe and slap it on a bun. The upside I guess is that it was a hot meal on a cold rainy day.

Maid right , Loose meat sandwich , or Tavern .
This is what I've been using .
1 lb ground beef
2 tsp salt edit : I salt to taste
1 onion , chopped
1 TBL. yellow mustard
1 TBL. vinegar
1 TBL sugar
Edit:
Brown the beef , drain the grease .
Add the other ingredients ,
then add enough water to almost cover , About 3/4 cup .
Stir to mix , then simmer it down until most of the water is gone .

And here I thought that the Maid-Rite in Greenville, OH was the one and only.

Kinda like the Kewpee Hamburgers in Lima, OH.

Learned something new.

Never heard of Maid Rite or Loose Meat, but this is close to my hotdog chili without the ketchup and less salt...

Yup . No tomato in this . I agree , kind of like a hot dog sauce .
I think the salt comes from the fact that the final mixture is supposed to be almost covered with water , and simmered . Cooks the meat down to a finer texture and size . So maybe that salt is needed for that , and cooks away ? Not sure , but I don't use that amount , and only add enough water to bring it all together .

The ground beef is also a finer grind than usual burger.

Here is another interesting spot that has been making them for a long time.

I live about 60 miles from this town and never heard of this establishment until your post. I don’t get there much but yesterday I had an appointment in town. I looked it up and went for lupper in the middle of the afternoon.
The place is old but very cool with only a horseshoe bar to sit at. Even in the afternoon the locals patrons kept the place busy.

I ordered two Canteen burgers so they made the second one after i had the first one done so it would be fresh.

i started making a variation of this when my boy was young. got tired of sloppy joes. id hard fry diced taters as usual then remove from skillet. then fry the burger and drain. season meat,(salt pepper garlic thyme rosemary), add bbq sauce and taters back in. stir it all together and warm taters back up(with lid) for lil while to blend flavors. serve on toast. i called it cowboy chow. lol

Nice . Love those places . How was it ?
It was very good! All they serve is maid rites and pie, no fries which is typical for these places. I didn’t get any pie as last night we had fresh Wild Blackberry pie 🥧

Here in Iowa we call them taverns.
1 lb hamburger
1 small onion
1 tsp dry mustard
1/4 tsp chili powder
1/2 cup ketchup
1/4 cup water
3/4 tsp salt
My mother in law used to serve these when she owned the bakery in town. Mine gets a slice of American cheese... my wife likes to top hers with Lays potato chips!
We always make a bigger batch and freeze some for quick easy meals.
