Welcome to SMF glad you joined us. You can produce some great Q with about any smoker so I would say use the type your most comfortable with. Many of the electric models are pretty much set it and forget it and the propane would be the next closest type for that. It seems all type smokers have advantages and disadvantages so go with the type you think you'd enjoy using the most.

I'm going to move your thread to the Roll Call section so you can get a proper welcome to SMF

hi Jim,

I chose a propane due to a bad weather experience with a electric i borrowed. water and electric don;t mix well. I didn't want to master both fire and meat. so I went propane and it lets me master my recipes. someday i may get a stick burner but for the next 3 years or so it my trusty Masterbuilt XL.

there are some threads about mod for the unit to make it run like a champ. just do a quick search.

good luck picking one out.

to SMF! Piney pretty much summed it up, find what you like and use it often! Lot's of threads on here with the pros and cons of every type of smoker, I would do a lot of reading before I made a decision so I got what I felt best for me!

Have a Happy Memorial Day!

I grew-up cooking on wood and charcoal. Do not let it scare you. Its not that hard if you buy a decent smoker with thick steel and quality construction. The temps are easily controlled with the dampers/vent stacks on quality constructed units. I would be glad to recommend a brand or talk about it further if you are not totally against it. I have cooked on gas/propane smokers and grills but not alot.

I have a master forge propane and love it. A few quick mods and it is a great running unit. Do plenty of research before you purchase.
