I just filled my tanks and one is leaking.
In the picture it's where the red dot is. It's opposite of where it connects to the grill. Not sure if that part is able to be tightened. Didn't really want to mess with it since it's full and don't really want to start a fire.

I believe that is the pressure relief valve of the tank that is there to off gas when the pressure is too much.

That's what it is. I called the hardware store where I got it filled. He said the same thing. It stopped after a few minutes.
Thanks

Yea, sometimes you just need to tap it on top with a wrench just for vibration and that relief valve will seat usually.

More than likely it got overfilled slightly. So, the pressure relief did its job.
Or the temperature warmed up so the gas pressure over the liquid increased.
It's all normal but a good reminder why you don't want to transfer (and certainly not store) propane in a closed vehicle or van.

That too. There's good reason why they are mounted open on RVs.

Yep I've seen that happen many times
I'll just hook it up to a high BTU appliance and run it for a few minutes to bleed off the pressure

My truck camper has a 20# horizontal in a side compartment.

I presume it is vented though?
Our class A has one 20#
Fifth wheel has two 30#
Both are in compartments. Both vented.

Yes vented. Compartment is also metal lined and sealed with caulking.
After they came out with OPD horizontals, I didn't replace the tank. I removed the tank and use compartment for more storage. Changed to a 6' whip hose and just use a 30#er on the ground

how long those tanks ben out?? never seen a tank like that. mine both have screws there. the amish girl loosens it when she fills it, then closes it towards the end. we are just behind the times i guess. lol maybe i should cherish the two i have.

i was at a party where one caught fire from being over filled. at least thats what one guy said it was from. flames were coming out of the bottom of the grill more like liquid than gas! after the fire was out he bled it for lil while then fired it back up to grill.

Well, again learned something new here. Never had one do this, but good to know its not something to panic about. I always get them refilled (not the exchange rip off). Refills ehre are about half the cost of the exchanges. I just use the exchange when the tank outdates and get a new one.

The vent screw is only used on the initial fill to purge the air in a new tank. After that you are wasting gas. It doesn't give you any more of a fill as the scale or the OFD is the limit.

Or the temperature warmed up so the gas pressure over the liquid increased.

This is common.
One of the reasons the blue label prefilled only puts in 16# for the suburban consumer to haul home in their SUV

In my old days of driving a propane fork lift. That's how we told if our tank was filled. Open the relief valve and fill it up until the propane spewed out.

Thats how they used to fill them, pretty sure not everyone does.

Fork lifts are horizontal tanks with liquid feed to the vaporizer. Not the same as a vertical gas feed. Gas feeds need at least a 20% head space to vaporize more liquid into gas.
That's why when you have a unit that uses the 1# disposables that recommend or have a hanger to hold the bottle at a 45° angle to add more surface area for the liquid to vaporize to gas.
In cold weather I used to point the propane space heater at the tank to warm it so the heater stayed lit.
