Lava Rocks to help heat?

I cant finda 13" grill for my ECB grill frst time using it. Can I lay lava rock on the bottom of the charcoal pan then put charcoal on top? Wouldnt this help the heating issue or with the mods in place already would this be too much? I plan on getting a grill/grate for the charcoal pan but if not will this work? I would imagine as long as I dont block the vents it should be fine. Any input on this would be great...thanks!

It might work if you keep the vents clear but that may be a challenge. The beauty of the grate is so the ash can fall through easy. Heck, give it a try! You may have to shake the pan a few times to get the ash to move. Let us know your findings!
