I've never had a problem with my knives in the dishwasher. But I always run them on a steel right before I use them anyway.
 
No that isn't true...You must anneal them first some forms are heating steel till d-magnetized and soaking in vermiculite for a slow cooling process. And that is the basics on how to soften metals
 
What he said. It would take probably over 1200F to start to temper the blade - depending on how it was heat treated in the first place and metal chemistry.
