I'm thinking of installing an electric smoker element to my Grand Champ XD.
I want to keep it simple for the time being. So no PID right now.
I think I would install it low towards the firebox side and probably put a metal plate over it to deflect direct heat.
I might use it after I get in a few hours of smoke from wood/charcoal.
Or to overnight a brisket after it's been wrapped (I'd probably throw a moving blanket over the whole cooker).
It might even come in handy to just hold and keep food warm after it cooks.

I am looking at a simple element with the adjustable knob like this.

Any and all input is appreciated.

Sounds like it may work, you will just have one side of the smoker way hotter than the other side but I don't see any massive issues as long as the element fits.
Also beware that it's a 1500w element so that pulls 12amps. If you are running 3 more amps on the same circuit of the home you may flip your breaker at the breaker box. As long as nothing major is running off the same breaker circuit you are plugging into then I think it would be ok.

I'm interested to see what you discover... for the sake of Science and all :D
Finally, the good news with an element like that is you can easily use it with a PID controller should that time come. You just turn the dial fully open and then let the PID control it as though it was a dumb full throttle heating element.

I put that same element in an old kettle . I haven't cooked with it yet . I do have it setup for a PID ( I have one on my MES )
I ran it at 350 without the PID . Actually seemed to hold temp pretty good , but that's a kettle .

Any and all input is appreciated.
I see no reason why it wouldn't work as you say . Certainly as an assist .
