My search fu is not working tonight. I've tried but cannot find the information I want; so please bear with me.

I know I've read somewhere about putting a tube through the side of a mini-WSM or the lid of a Weber kettle so that you can put your smoker probe inside the cooking chamber without having to crimp the wire with a lid or a door. I've got the Maverick ET-73. I've read that the probes shouldn't come in contact with metal, hence using a potato or a block of wood to hold it. That makes sense but I also know that I've read about folks who set up a brass tube or something so the probe can be inserted without contacting steel.

Have I lost it this time? CRS sets in sometimes . . .

If anyone can point me to a link, I'd be much obliged.

I remember seeing people talk about some parts from a lamp repair kit and drilling holes in the cover and running the wires through that.  I've not done that with my ECB, but if the wires aren't supposed to touch the metal, maybe I should add that to my list of things to do this winter.

I've seen some threads you are talking about but don't remember where. All they are using is threaded nipples that are used in lamps.

They look like this but they have nuts on each end, you can get them at any hardware store. I took this picture from here:

I just drilled 2 small holes through the side of my GOSM and have had no problems with my probes and have done this for over a year almost every weekend. The tube gives a nice finished look but I really don't see the need other than looks.
