How to Maximize smoke time with wood chunks or chips?

I have noticed that every time I add chunks or chips to the pan, I only get an hour or so smoke if I am lucky.  I have also noticed that wood almost always ignites (even if I have soaked them).  One of the last times I had a long smoke I decided to fill up my chip pans with chunks and cover it with foil making some holes in the foil.  But I must not have done a very good job of foiling it because the chunks bursed into flames and my temps shot through the roof.

Does anyone know of away to get a long lasting smoke while still maintaining the use of the chip pan?   I may try the foil method again but do a better job of making it a bit more air tight.

I do not want to use the Amazing pellet smoker gizmo either.

  What kind of smoke ring do you get with it?  I don't really want to modify my smoker or add another component if it is not absolutely necessary.  Not a real good reason but I hoping there is away for me to prolong my smoke times..
 
what material is your chip pan made from? i replaced mine with a big cast iron skillet( 10 x 16) and if it catches fire i  just move it off to the cooler sides spots. 

The chip pans are some kind of a coated steel, not really too heavy duty.  I think I am going to experiment with wrapping my chip pan air tight with foil and making only a few little holes to see what that does.
