....mine was a disaster. Bottom of the CC was covered in ash. Had gotten to the point that the cooking grate was getting ash deposited on it. Jacked the nose up and hit it with a pressure washer. Left the fire grate and ash pan out for a while so the firebox could dry out. Lit a fire, tossed on a few larger splits... 450* in the CC for over an hour. Not going to let it get this bad again. Nothing like having ash land on your food lol....wish there was a way to keep the ash from blowing around...

Yep Post some pics maybe we can help, shouldn't be getting ashes all on your meat ?

Gary

Hey Buddy one problem I see is your wood grate needs to be raised up, That will help two things better fire and heat management  and a place for the ashes to drop

Gary
The ash pan is about 2.5" deep...not the best picture so it is,difficult to see it..

3" leg in place of the angle iron would help get air under the grate...  Angle iron blocks air flow...

I'd raise it at least 3 "   or 4 " wouldn't hurt, that way you can get plenty of air underneath

Here is one we built last year, and doing a test run   See how much room there is underneath

Got it. Just went and dug thru my scrap pile, have a 21" hunk of angle iron. Soon as I get my car trailer out of the garage I will be fixing this. Well... will be after I get power back to my well house...damn gophers...

Raised the fire grate today. Have about 6" under it. Still getting ash in the cook chamber...and even though I have the air intake, which is now completely below the fire grate wide open I can't get the splits beyond smoldering...

Dang Ink,  Raising the great with plenty of airflow those splits should not have any problem catching fire and burning. You can see in post #10 how those splits are burning.
