Well, it's not like I needed another hobby but I'm heading in that direction. I've started roasting my own green coffee beans. It's surprisingly affordable and quite delicious. Does anyone else have the coffee roasting bug? Seemed like the natural next step for me. Homebrewing, cooking, smoking, sausage making, cheese making,... why not coffee roasting? I'm using the "Fresh Roast + 8" roaster if anyone's interested.

You can go the cheap route for coffee using one of those air popcorn popper. I've seen it done. It won't make a dark roast, but it did a pretty good job for a medium roast. I guess it would work with a peanut if shelled, but an oven would seem easier.

Yeah, I've got an acquaintance that does just that quite successfully. I love gadgets so I opted for the roaster but not because it's truly better.

My brother-in-law uses the popcorn air popper too. he said he buys them at garage sales so that he has some spares. I don't roast coffee myself, but his tasted pretty good.

So are we talking roasting beans in the smoker or the oven? If not the smoker.....why not? I'm a gallon a day type coffee drinker. In the office, we have an extra carafe labeled with my name on it. Everyone knows to stay away from that stuff, lest hair would start growing places it doesn't ordinarily grow.

Anyhow, wonder what smoked beans would be like?

EDIT: Looks like Mr Tulsa himself blogged on this last year:http://www.smoking-meat.com/2006/04/...beans-tip.html

beat me too it geek.........i fowarded this thread to my wife, and she was wondering why you couldn't smoke em first before roasting..

Sure. For what it's worth they seemed to have the best deals on the net. Great intro deal with a roaster and a wide assortment of beans. They've also got great customer service. (I'm in no way affiliated with them)

my sister and brother-in-law have a time share in Hawaii and go over there every year. they toured a couple of the coffee plantations on the islands and that's what got them started.

google for "Kona Coffee" and you will get a good number of sites to order beans from. buying Christmas gifts for them is a no-brainer for me.

I thought I had been around the turnip patch a time or two but I have never heard of roasting your own coffee. Doesn't surprise me though. Not sure where I get the fresh beans around here.

The green beans are very stable. There's a wealth of places to order them online. I'd never seen a green bean before I started this endeavor. They don't look or smell much like coffee. Sort of waxy and very hard. Smaller than the finished product too.

Cool thread! Daughter gave us about five pounds of roasted beans for Christmas and now we're spoiled, Folgers just ain't the same anymore!
I've been checking for roasted beans on ebay and kept coming across auctions for green beans & roasters but never really considered getting into the roasting end of it. Does sound interesting though, especially if you can do it with a popcorn popper!
