DC Metro - Northern Virginia
Greetings Fellow Smokers.

I am a novice smokers living in the DC metro area. I have been grilling for several years but just recently got into smoking. I started with a Brinkmann smoking "bullet" I believe it was called. It died a rusty death (left out in the elements without a cover

). Got a vertical charcoal/wood smoker for a Christmas gift, Brinkmann also. I know I need to do some mods to it but for now I figure I will learn the ropes on it before stepping up to a better rig.

Any comments, questions, suggestions (aside from throw out the Brinkmann

) would be appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to the SMF, a fine place for friendly folks. Read around and you'll find plenty of great advise, you can always ask about something you can't find. The members are always willing to share.

If not, I hope y'all will put together some bail money for me...LOL. I'm in the Virginia suburbs trying to hold on to my southern roots.

Mike, the smoker in the middle of your signature is the one I have. I have tried lump charcoal and that seems to be the best to keep the temps stable and high. Have you tried any modifications to your fire pan? I installed a small grate on the bottom so there is about a 1 inch space to allow air to circulate under the coals (I'll include a pic later)

Welcome to the Site VA. Tons of info here and lots of great people. The ones from VA are really great

I am from fairfax and have joined not too long ago, where in virginia are you? I have a brinkmann stick burner and one rival electric smoker. I just can't seem to stop smoking foods....

No, I have not modified it any way. It does fine as is. But the air space under the charcoal sounds reasonable. Lump is all I use. My only issue with this smoker is the water pan, it is too small. Same issue with the GOSM gasser.
These are pretty much just square ECB's.
