The most storied quarterback career in NFL history is coming to a close.

FOXSports.com has learned that legendary quarterback Brett Favre has decided to retire. In fact, it's believed he informed the Packers of his decision within the last few days, although it's unclear when Favre and the team will make his decision known.

So barring an unforeseen last-minute change of heart, Favre will leave the game after 17 years, during which he built himself into a household name and a figure synonymous with grit, toughness and perseverance.

I always respected Favre... class act. A parallel can be drawn to Steve Yzerman- and a few others- FEW others. Green Bay has been most fortunate to have the likes of him at all, not to mention as the protypical franchise man. The days of pro atheletes such as these a dwindling, and not far from extinction, sadly enough. Thanks Brett... helluva run buddy.

The man has made the last 17 years of my life a living hell but he has done it with such class and sportsmanship you can't help but tip your bears hat and your beer to him. Bears/Packers tailgating will not be the same. God Speed Brett!

He did the same to me but was such a great guy to watch play the game it was hard to hold a grudge. Plus I always looked forward to he and warren sapp going at it on the field.

I am kinda happy he is leaving now. Last season was one of his best. Its good to go out on top rather then being boo'd off the field... (not that he would get to that point)

17 years of playing in the frozen tundra of Lambau Feild is impressive in itself. It is a shame that the last pass he ever threw was an interception.

The man needs to get his head on straight and get back on the feild! Quit your crying and don't leave the feild until they carry you off!

This is FOOTBALL!

You got to respect him for knowing when to call it quits and some players don't know when to retire and they keep playing long after they should......He is one heck of a player.......17 years is a long hard road in football.....Hats off to him........

Tough call, I tend to think that he still has a couple of seasons left in him at least on the physical level that is. I do think that his head or heart is no longer in it. Not to sound sadistic, but I would rather see a guy go out with an injury than to loose his love for the game. I just seems to me that he has lost the will. Maybe he knows what is best for himself, maybe he has physical aches and pains that I don't know about. Maybe he has the fear of impending doom, real or not. It is not my call to make, and I would give him a hard time right to his face about any of it, but I am also sure that he knows what he has accomplished and that he has my deepest respect. I extend a firm handshake, pat on the back and the tip of a beer in his direction. If anyone deserves to be at peace with himself, he does. His life, his choice.

Now back to the football side of life........

Get back into the game you big sissy!
