OK so some brands of whiskey use charcoal  for mellowing. We know what happens to the whiskey (I'm closely studying some now) but what happens to the charcoal? Is it simply discarded? Isn't there potential for a new version of self-lighting briquettes?

Also it might add flavor to the smoke off of the charcoal.   HM...   you might be onto something here.   I doubt it would make it match light because the alcohol content of most whiskey isnt quite high enough to be lightable but it could end up adding flavor.

I barrel age cocktails in white oak charred barrels.  When the barrel has served it's purpose (after 4 or so aging's) I chop it up and use it in my smoker as an addition.  Has added a little of the essence but not as much as I would like.  Still a great way to recycle a barrel!!!
