When my father passed away in 2016, we were tasked with packing up my parents' possessions which included a lot of their parents' stuff. Much of this stuff was put in storage and since my wife retired in January, her mission has been to go through all those boxes, along with driving me nuts, but that's another story...lol. I am not much of a baker, but both of my grandmothers were good bakers as most women were back in the early to middle part of the last century. Here are a few things of theirs that she "found"...

Probably may favorite memory in this group, my Nana's cookie jar. I remember it sitting on her kitchen counter and when we'd go for a visit, the thought of what goodies may be hiding inside would get my mouth watering. BUT, I wasn't allowed to touch it. I was a teenager when she passed and then this jar came to rest on our counter where my dad kept it stocked with Oreos...

The kitchen scales were on the counter, too. They still work and cost $1.80 new from the Sears, Roebuck, and Co...

The tag says "DO NOT DETACH" and it never was...lol...

An ECKO egg beater. These things have some heft to them and still work, but most things from back then were made to last...

A pair of Bromwell's flour sifters, a 5 cup and a 3 cup, still in working order...

And finally a pecan cracker and picks. I remember having to use these. I was told that if I wanted cookies, I had to do my part and that included cracking/picking out pecans and picking them up off of the ground, too. The cracking part never lasted very long because I couldn't do it right or fast enough...lol. The base was probably not original to the set, but I'm not sure...

I remember my Nana's cookies and pound cake and my grandmother's biscuits the most. No monetary value here, but these are priceless to me. I can almost smell something in the oven right now.

Just thought I'd share my "newfound" treasures and I'm sure many here have some similar items from their family history. Please post em up if you care to and as we uncover more, I will too...

That’s really cool. The memories are truly priceless. Wonder what else you’ll find?
I feel confident that somewhere there are rolling pins, wooden spoons, some bowls and baking pans. I remember those things so we'll see what else turns up...

That's awesome! Just love family heirlooms and history. We live in my grandparents house where my dad grew up. Was abandoned for 20 years when we gutted and remodeled it. Greatest treasure we found was grandpa's diploma from high school, 1907

Wow Charles. That is some awesome stuff and am awesome story. So cool to see the things back that we remember from our childhood. I have a feeling there will be a lot of those types of things when I have to start cleaning out my mom's house....which hopefully will never happen. Seems as though there has been quite a bit of family history having been shared here in the forum recently.

And finally a pecan cracker and picks.

I remember those!! There was a set exactly like that in every household of every family member. we actually had two sets. mom and I would sit on the couch in the evenings and watch Jeopardy to see how smart we were. Mom was pretty good but that is a category that I wasn't very strong in :emoji_wink:

I do not come from a heritage of great cooks. You are very lucky to have those memories and the objects to touch and hold.
Mom was the worst except for her fudge, which was the greatest. My
grandmother just didn't cook much, but her lemon meringue pie was great. No mementos there.
But my kids will have the opportunity to inherit. My youngest Daughter has already claimed on my LSG cabinet.

That LSG will certainly last well beyond that !

Our daughter and son-in-law will probably inherit my cookers, but our daughter has no interest in learning to use them as she has dad to cook for her now...lol and he hasn't stepped up to try and learn for the same reason. I'll suggest in my will that he become a member here and you guys can help him out...:emoji_laughing:

Growing up, my great grandparents, Mama and Papa, lived next door to my grandmother, Nana. Sunday dinner after church was always at their house and the thing that I remember most besides the good food was that they didn't have running water. In the kitchen was a huge sink with a pitcher pump on the end where she would pump water into the sink to wash dishes, cook with, etc. There was always a pot of hot water on the wood stove. My Papa grew all of their food and raised all of there meat and I remember sitting on their screen porch shelling beans. Man I hated shelling beans almost as much as picking them. That was a LONG time ago, but only seems like yesterday...

I know somewhere is some bowls, rolling pins, baking dishes, etc. At least I think they're here somewhere, but time will tell...
