I was wondering if I was the only one and I was a little hesitant to start a thread saying "Every time I fire up the smoker, the flys come around. Any suggestions?"

I'm glad I am not the only one with that problem and will have to give that a try.

Thanks.

i had heard of this trick and seen it a time or two but thought it wouldn't work. so i q-ed today and thought i would give it a try. it's so simple and i don't know how it works but it does. it's a baggie about 1/2 full of water and 1tbs of sugar. i tied mine with some waxcoated thread i had out from a project. (hey use what i had laying around)

here'e mine hanging in the yard. no trouble all day. even did an experiment. when i was cleaning the grills flys everywhere. got things started and thought about it. put it up then. no flys bothered me today.

once is was finished smoking and brought the meat it here came the flys. creativity took hold and i came up with this

i took another baggie and tied it to the end of a pen and stuck it under some bowels in the cabinet. pushed it in far enough to close the door.

i was still unconvinced that a simple baggie of sugar water would deter flys. so after i hung it up i turned out the light and waited nearby in case i needed to shoo any flies. to my amazement they buzzed around the meat and even the bag but very quickly found some other place to land. wish i could show you some viedo--have no means of doing that.
anyways hope this helps.

I am in the fire restoration business..(as in when houses burn). and in every one you will always find flys...the experts..(so called) say that it's the smoke smell good or bad that attracts them because they think it's food.

Interesting. Gonna try it my self. Wait better not. If I see my own reflection distorted, I may not want to hang around......LOL

What I don't understand is, if the bag is closed off, what is the purpose of the sugar?

i couldn't rememeber what i was told was in the baggie. so i figured i'd try something right? turns out after reading the link TH posted i think now it was a penny. ither way it may just be the water. try what you think will work let us know.

Well, perhaps the sugar changes or enhances the refractive qualities/properties of the water in the bag.

And heck, if it seems to work keep using it.
