Flat top built into round Firebox

I have a flat top pulled off a commercial range, roughly half inch thick steel. Building a smoker out of 120 gallon propane tank with a smaller propane tank fire box, does anybody have any experience with actually using a flat top built into a fire box kind of like fat stack used to do? Wondering how much effort I put into this side project. Meaning how well will it actually work. Maybe if it doesn't work as a true flat top it'll work as a warmer? Basically looking at doing this.

Cool idea for sure. Smash burgers for lunch while waiting for the brisket to cook.
 
I did find another response through a whole bunch of digging of a guy that did something similar. He stated he stated that he got 500 plus degrees with an infrared thermometer. Going to give it a go. Have the next week off of work to dig into it.
 
I’m with BigW on this, cool idea. For long cooks you could do both breakfast and lunch while cooking that brisket. I’ll be looking in to see how it works out.

I just measured my chunk of flat top steel, it's 3/4 of an inch! Trying to decide how to do this. I've got a few ideas. In the meantime this is where I'm at. Any opinions on if I should open up the full throat where I married up my firebox?

I have a TMG Pits Copperhead and it has a square firebox. The top of the box is a griddle. It has a lip around it and is slightly angled towards a drain in the back corner that runs down through the firebox to the ground or bucket or whatever...

You can see the square tubing in the back right of the picture, that is the drain line. I put a small bucket on the ground underneath to catch whatever.

This picture is from their website, but mine is exactly like this...
 
With a normal fire does it get hot enough to actually use as a griddle? Or do you have to crank up the fire

Yeah it's a little ridiculous.......actually alot ridiculous.......I had an old wolf commercial oven in my business that gave up the ghost, I hacked the flattop out of it when I scraped it. Has been sitting in my garage foe 2 years. It must have weighed 75lbs before I cut it down and fitted it on the firebox.
 
About 5 days away from being able to the test fire. Once I know if the griddle works and I'll put a grease drain in the front. Probably not the right place to post something but some updated pics
