Living in NJ tri-tip roasts are hard to come by. I finally found a place that has them regularly, but they are a bit pricey per pound at $7.99 per #. It may be because they are all-natural beef, but I don't have any other option so after walking by them for a few months I finally bought one. It was 1.71#. I am putting this info in because I don't have anything to reference it to, price-wise and size-wise, so feel free to comment on how this compares to ones available to you locally. For those in central NJ and want to take a whack at cooking one they are available at the Amish Farmer's Market on Rt 27 in Kingston just North of Princeton. Anyhow I prepped one with a rub of GSP yesterday and put it in the smoker at 225*. It took about an hour and fifteen minutes to get to an internal temp of 130*. I had my grill turned up to screaming hot level and threw it on for about two minutes on each side to crisp the barq up a bit and then let it rest in foil for 30 minutes. Sliced it up and had it with some roasted red potatoes and mexi-corn...IT WAS GREAT! I am a big london broil guy and based on how the cut looked I though this would be similer but boy was I wrong. It came out soooo tender and it picked up a just the right amount of smoke (used a mix of hickory and mesquite). I will absolutely do this again. I now just have to try a little harder to try and locate some nearby to where I live.
