Santa and A-MAZE-N were good to me and my new MES30 this year. Got a Mav 732 (which i already used on Christmas day and LOVE it!), as well as a AMNPS and an assortment of pellets. Yesterday was my first go with all the new gizmo's.
I did a dry trial run early in the day just to experiment with smoke and make sure the AMNPS didnt burn out or ignite on me...and it was successful. Later on for the real deal i did some baby backs just for simplicity's sake. I'm pleased to report great success!
I'd say i easily achieved TBS with the AMNPS (I used the pitmasters choice blend yesterday). I loaded the tray just to gauge burn time and I got 7 hours on just shy of 2 rows...I think I"m in the ballpark. a MAPP torch made short work of igniting the pellets and i never had any flame outs. I also prefer to smoke ribs with the water tray filled and the moisture had seamingly no effect on the pellets.
To prevent drippings from putting the flame out i did some hard core engineering and crafted this tent:
its just a cut-up foil pan that rests on the loader structure on one side and is suspended by some foil "cables" on the other. I poked some holes in the top to help smoke and heat rise out of the tent, thinking that even if a drip managed to get right into one of the holes, it wouldnt have enough of an impact to put the whole flame out. I intend this to be a mock up before making a more permanent piece with some stainless (but then again, if this works maybe I'll let it ride for a while!). I'm please to report that this worked just fine.
All in all the AMNPS is a great product....I look forward to now being able to perform some longer smokes that wont require me to get up every 40 minutes to fill the stock chip tray!
Happy new year everyone!
