Just wanted to post my first cook on the Rec Tec 590. Everything went well for the first cook. Temps stay pretty much consistent the entire time. I even had my thermoworks smoke and they we very close to each other. Overall the unit is very solid from what I can see. The build quality is great. Customer service is top notch. I had a problem with UPS and they sent me a free cover because of my trouble with UPS even though it wasn’t there issue. First cook was small some ribs and rib tips. Looking forward to some more cooks.

Wow:emoji_astonished:. This is how you start out? Impressive.:emoji_sunglasses: Everything looks great.

A word about the Thermoworks smoke though. Rec Tec says to take your comparison temp from the center of the grill and at around 250*.

You can also calibrate your temp probes.

I test mine very near the grill's actual temperature probe, but I have since read that the algorithm is such that the actual temp at the probe is not what is displayed on your screen, but rather it is a corrected number to give a more accurate representation of what the temp is at the center of the grill.

I don't know, but if you are around 5* or so different, depending upon where you're measuring with your Thermoworks, I wouldn't sweat it. Every cooker has spots on it which are hotter or colder than others.

Yea I did the calibration on the initial set up.
Yea 5 degrees is nothing.

Great looking first smoke, and there's nothing small about a full smoker.

Point for sure
Chris

Yea coming from a propane smoker definitely different. Really like the smoker though so far. Hopefully some pulled pork and chicken thighs next weekend. Anyone have a good smoked chicken thigh recipe?

Congrats, brine them smoke for a hour or 2 then 350 to render some fat and crisp the skin till done

Planning on doing a cook on sat. Suppose to be relativity windy sat. Anyone smoke on the rec tecs in higher wind?
Any issues?

Just received my Rec Tec 590 yesterday. Although not relative to your post, I'm glad to see you liked it...makes me more excited to try mine.

Congrats. Did two cooks already on mine and love it. I would like to try some 100 hickory in my ANMPS

I just got a 590 and tried it out yesterday. I was very happy.

2 things though:

1. The pellets didn't completely burn out when the fan shutdown after I turned if off.

2. The pellet hopper wall nearest the grill is very warm. Concerns me that it could potentially ignite the pellets. I'm sure I'm just being paranoid there.

1. I honestly never check to see if there were pellets burning still after the cool down. I never had anymore heat or smoke after the cooldown

2. Never really touched the side of the wall hopper. I have down a lot of cooks now never had an issue at all. Even had the grill over 400 before didn’t see to notice any problem there.

I’m with you.

1. There are still a few smoldering pellets in the bottom and left area of the burn pot. Even after shutdown is complete.

This is why you don’t want to vacuum it out, let alone put your hands into it until several hours after the shutdown is complete.

I also do not install my cover until the grill is cool to the touch.

2. The side of the grill is not likely to get hot enough to ignite the pellets in the hopper.

Pellets can be difficult to ignite with a lit blowtorch unless you hold the flame to them The warm surface of the left grill side is not going to ignite them either.

I was thinking the same thing. The tube AMS thing can be a trick to keep lit someday's.
