If you don't have a budget and you are looking for kind of a best of both worlds sort of thing you might want to look into a small pellet grill/smoker. There are some good options out there. I had a MES. I bought it when I was first trying to see if I was any good at all of this. I found it to be a lot more babysitting than I had originally thought. I had temp probe issues. took me a while to get the smoke figured out. Got caught up in a recall because the door would burst open, etc. I recently got a RecTec pellet smoker and what a difference it is. I made a 10 pound pork butt over the weekend. And honestly all I had to do after I got it prepared was put it on my smoker, make sure the hopper was full, and wait until it hit 195 (about 19 hours). There are advantages and disadvantages to everything but the pellet grills seem to be a good compromise between a stick burner and an electric smoker. I'm happy to answer any questions about the MES you have. I had it for about 5 years. Don't get me wrong I made some good stuff with it. However, it's not as easy as these companies would like to make it sound. I'm happy to share what I found worked best for me.

I ordered a Smokin It #2 yesterday. Can't wait to get it! Got it for $50 (10%) off and free shipping. They've got that offer through Jan 2 on all smokers if anyone is interested.

Does anyone have this smoker? If so, all tips would be appreciated. I've been using the cheap brinkman propane smoker for 5 years or so. Only smoker I've ever used. I've had great success with it, but I've worn it out. Looking forward to this new electric Smokin It.

Conratulations on your new Smoking It #2.
After reading your post, I checked out what the price with 10% discount would be on a #3 with wifi.
My wife would still kill me if I bought one at that price.
Well, she wouldn't kill me...but I'd be in the dog house for a week or two.
I am certain you'll love your new #2.

Just a thought...

Free shippping ($115) was the kicker. I guess I'll order a blue tooth thermometer. I don't know if my maverick will work with this unit. Not sure there will be room for the wires.

I would wait on ordering a new probe. One thing I have read about Smoking Its is that they are pretty much dead nuts accurate.

Good looking brisket!

I'm a MES 30 user and I love it. I do small smokes like you, and it's taken everything like a champ. My only complaint is wishing I had more room for ribs and brisket. That's why I'd recommend the MES 40.

I use an Amazen Tube, but would recommend the maze. I also struggle with accurate temp readings, but my Maverick ET-733 takes the guessing out of that.
