My MES burned up on Thanksgiving day with about 5* temp left to go to finish the turkey. Luckily there was enough heat left in the MES to bring the bird to 160*. The turkey was good, but the MES is junk. the power unit burned up and probably isn't worth fixing.
I will always have fond memories of the MES, it is the unit that started me into the hobby.
I have decided to go with an offset OK Joe's as a replacement that I have started to mod already with propane burner, fire brick lining and tuning plate. Really looking forward to my first smoke on the new unit, but I will miss this crew.
Thanks Everyone!

Bye.............for now. You'll be back. It's an out door warming/holding oven for your new smoker. You'll see. In a matter of days you'll toss and turn at night. Lose sleep.

;) Could have been worse.......
Saw this on another site long ago...

Man that sucks.
Any thoughts on rewiring and using a PID controller?

From your description it sounds like the controller died and the controller portion of the MES sucks anyhow.
With a PID controller you could control within 2-5 degrees with no issue. You would also need to use something like the AMNPS for smoke but if you are an MES owner it is likely you already do.

I ask all this because I have a feeling you would still like to have an electric smoker as well as the OK Joe :)

Either way best of luck!
