I'm going to bypass the MES controls all together and tie the element to my Auber.
Before I make any connections I checked continuity with my old multi-meter. Should there be any readings from the connection spades on the element and the smoker chassis? I'm getting reading when one probe is on the smoker and I touch the other probe to either of the element spades? I'm no electrician but this just doesn't appear to be right to me. Also there is a threaded stud between the spades. Is this for the ground wire? there is nothing there right now.

Was there a problem with your smoker before this? You can see resistance to ground. But, as already mentioned. What was the reading? Was this smoker plugged into a GFI outlet? Was it tripping your GFI?

The initial problem was it would not stop heating and go to 375f. I ordered a new controller but that didn't work. now I assume the it stopped working because the element was fried. Oh well ordering a new element.

Thanks everyone!
Problem solved for now.

Ha ha. Yes new element. The new Mes 30 element on the two spades is 18 ohms and Mes 40 is 12 ohms. Touching one probe to a spade and to anywhere on the element should have no continuity. If the element bracket ground wire is gone make one that goes from the bracket to an access screw on the back of the smoker cover plate.
