Where is the prime spot to have the temp gauge?

closer to the lid???

closer to the water pan???

is it hotter near the lid?

I try to put the temp gauge hovering over the top rack but i fear being so close to the meat it will not give a true reading.

any info would be a great help

Nope

Yep

Quit panicing! Yer doin' fine. Ideally, you move it with multiple things in the smoker. Rack levels can vary quite a bit...I read a post here a while back where it was almost 50° from bottom to top rack.

You want to measure temp where your cookin......at the grate.

If your concerned about the temp difference at each grate, use 2 thermo's!

Mine is outfitted to suspend the probe just under the top grate. I rarely smoke on the bottom grate so I haven't worried about that one yet.
