For those who give their dogs bones, I have a question. I buy dog bones from my local butcher 3 or 4 times a year. These bones are Thick and can't be splintered by my dogs. They can widdle them down a bit, but they are not breaking of pieces from these. Has anyone ever put dogs bones on their smoker to infuse flavor to the bones? My concern is that it could alter the taste of other meat I may have on the smoker at the same time. I don't want to waste pellets on just smoking bones only. Do you think this would affect the taste, smell or flavor of other meats being on the smoke at the same tine? Thanks

I’ve thought about smoking them for my dogs. Both are very aggressive power chewers. Kind of funny since they are both mini doodles. My vet has told me not to use cooked bones as they will be far more likely to splinter. I’m thinking maybe cold smoking is what I will try.

I wouldn't think the dog would mind if you smoke your meat along with his Bones. He won't complain one Bit. Dogs are good that way!

That reminds me of an old friend from high school that came out to eat dinner with us last summer. We were sitting around the smoker having several adult beverages. He was admiring how healthy a fit my labs looked. I have 3 one black one chocolate and a yellow. He said he would like to get one someday but did not know what color he would want. A few minutes later The chocolate started cleaning himself and eventually started licking his balls. My friend says with a big grin on his face. Man I wish I could do that. I looked him straight in the eye and said. Go ahead he won't bite you.

Honestly I would not consider using pellets a waste if using them to prep something for my pup to enjoy.

Our dogs are family. They will also get meat scraps of what ever I happen to be smoking at the time, to go along with the bones. If I can spend hundreds of dollars a year for trips to the vet. I can spend $10 on pellets for trying to make them something they will enjoy.

Couldnt agree more!! My pups are often my sole source of sanity lol they are beloved beyond belief. Unfortunately one of them is very sensitive to table scraps. Two bouts of pancreatitis and a vet scolding later I limit them to kibble, Cheerios and nylabones mostly lol.

Skid isn't a bone chewer, but he loves the marrow. I wouldn't hesitate to toss a marrow bone on the smoker while other meats are in there. We normally just try to push or scrap out as much of the marrow as we can. The post above is correct and it's not recommended to give your dogs cooked bones. Splintered bone in the gums or intestines of your best buddy isn't a fun experience.
