Curing inside of grill

I have rust both inside and outside of grill [char-griller pro offset] and purchased paint to treat outside.  I was told by people at bbq store to smear the inside of the unit with lard and get a hot fire going.

Will this really work. If so, how much lard do I need?

Buy a box of it, Your Local Grocery Store has it.  Use it, if that is not enough, go get another and finish it off.
