i was wondering just how some of you CLEAN your smokers and particularly the
racks. I just dug out my gasser after a little more then a year in hibernation and
The racks are looking pretty nasty. I scrubbed them in the sink with some dish
soap but I think they should be cleaner than what they are. Does anyone have a
better way to clean them , if so I would appreciate the info

I use my gas grill or the rocket burner aka turkey fryer burn it of brunch it down and start over. IMO you use them once and their dirty again so unless their really nasty I go old school fire kills everything.

I just cleaned my MES 30 for the first time in two years. I describe that process here:

Cleanliness Is Next To Godliness ... But Does It Taste Good?

As you will see if you read that, I used five different solvents, but none of them worked that well, and I ended up doing a lot of scraping. PerazziMx14 made the same recommendation there that he is making here: Purple Power. He said it would reduce my five hour chore to less than half an hour. Needless to say, I am dying to buy some of this stuff and try it out.

For my shelf/racks and for everything else that can be removed (including the shelf supports), I use my ultrasonic cleaner. It always feels like cheating because the stuff just pops off, usually in less than a minute. I don't have to do any work. Here is a post I made eighteen months ago that describes using the ultrasonic cleaner on my MES:

Ultrasonic Cleaning

On gas grill just leave it on high for 30 minutes or so and it will clean itself. Gives the grates a few smacks with a stick after 20 minutes or so and the stuff with fall right off.

A weed burner will clean anything off the grates in a minute or so.
When I start the fire in my Lang I also use the weed burner on the grates, if they need it.

I do the same Al. Just be carefull with the weed burner. I lingered a bit too long and warped one of the racks. Just have to keep it moving.
