Just a question......Should rubs made just for beef or chicken contain brown sugar or maybe a reduced amount?  My only concern is best flavor.
 
IMHO, I think it is all personal preference.  I have made one rub and use it on everything (beef, chicken, pork, venison, etc.).  If you like it, then use it.  If you try it and it is too sweet on a particular piece of meat, try lowering the amount.  I know you were probably looking for a yes or no answer, but I really think it is all what you like and what works for you.
