charcoal to propane

Hello, I have an offset smoker.  I also have an old propane grill.  I would like to add the burners from that grill to the smoke box.  Are their any pros or cons I should consider?  I was thinking about maybe adding a few coals to the grate in the smoke box to give it a better, more smoke like flavor.  Is that a good idea?  What are your thoughts?

I added a propane side burner harvested from a gas grill to my upright portion of my smoker, so I have some flexibility.  It works great -- especially for low temp smokes on cheese, fish, & jerky.  Not much to the conversion; I just mounted the burner in the bottom of the coal pan.  I use a small cast iron skillet on the burner with chips/chunks for smoke.  It also works great for starting a chimney of coals!

Are you thinking of adding it to the SFB?  I wonder if your burners would generate enough BTU's for your cook chamber to maintain 225-250* temps.  Probably only one way to find out...

Keep us posted if you try the conversion.  I wouldn't think you would run into too many problems.  Hanging the burners so they are solid & keeping the air-fuel mix right are your main concerns I would think.

You will need to protect the burner from ash if its to be in the firebox and try to have the venturi on the outside of the firebox.
