Anyone here familiar with this group called the Carolina Pitmasters? www.carolinapitmasters.com

There's a BBQ group here in South Carolina called the South Carolina Barbecue Association and this school/class is listed in their forums. I'm thinking about joining the association to see what it's all about, but I'm also curious about the class being offered.

I know I want to start competing sometime in the near future, and I'm sure my food will be tasty enough to compete with, it's the presentations and preparations that I'm not sure about.

So, I'm kind of hoping someone here knows about the class in some way and can let me know if that $500 fee is going to be worth it or not. Money's awfully tight 'round here. LOL

Thanks!

Seem like a unique experience to me . Plus it helps the kids . If you have the funds I would go for it . If not just keep reading and asking here . SMF has the answers but it's up to us to find them and dig them out of fellow users !

From the Web page .

The Class
Do you love BBQ? If you’re like most folks, you do. You now have the unique opportunity to learn to make great BBQ like your favorite BBQ restaurant, or like the professional BBQ teams seen on TV. Don’t let this one of a kind BBQ experience pass you by. for Shriners KIDS

We only allow Kansas City BBQ here, none of that Southern Stuff they don't know BBQ...

Wellllllll.....i'll have to respectfully disagree with that statement. I live in the South, but I'm not from here. Mine's a bit of every style, we don't do that mustard or vinegar sauce 'round here.

Anyhow, it'll be some time before I can afford the class, and I plan to pick brains here as much as I can. I'd just like to find a really good source of info for competition prep. I can cook, (I have many satisfied "customers") I just don't know about the process of doing it all at a comp. The presentation, the meat prep FOR presentation (trimming thighs to look like little round balls?) That sort of stuff.

you might try to go spectate at a comp. or two and watch and ask questions
i'll bet you'll learn alot for free !

good luck

My opinion only...I'd keep reading and practicing and even go ahead and enter a couple of smallish comps. Then if you decide to get a little more serious and want to compete a lot and try and take on the big boys, then I can see where these classes would be a valuable resource.

Yeah, I have a couple comps lined up to attend as a spectator in the next couple of months. So at least I'm thinking the right thing about observing and talking up the competitors.

I just want to enter to see how I stack up, I don't necessarily think you'll be seeing me on BBQ Pitmasters or anything. LOL I would just like to try it out
