Hello Tim.  The amzps can be used anywhere you could imagine.  It would even work in the oven if you could vent the smoke to the outside.

The pellets are lit and the allowed to smolder to produce smoke.  The heat source used for cooking doesn't matter.  Air flow is needed obviously.  Hope this helps.  Keep Smokin!

It might work in a horizontal smoker if you had good airflow but most people using charcoal will use wood chunks for smoke because they have to tend the fire anyway. I have read hundreds of threads on here about the AMNPS and don't remember any about using it in a horizontal and I think that is just because fire tenders love to tend their fire.

In electric smokers the chips don't last very long and people have turned to the AMNPS so that they aren't tending to the smoke all day long.

The AMNPS has not had very good results in propane smokers because there is not enough O2 because the propane flame burns it all up. The AMNTS has been showing pretty good results in propane smokers.

I don't think an AMNPS would work in an oven because there is not any intake air and all the O2 would burn up quick and without O2 the AMNPS would go out.

Your best bet for an accurate answer to your question would be to call Todd, he can answer anything you need to know about it:

Thank you!! The reason I was asking was I was going to try bacon..Can you smoke bacon on a horizontal without cooking it?? and if so do you have any pointers..Thanks Tim

Sorry I haven't made any bacon yet but since it is cold smoked I can see where a horizontal with an AMNPS would work. Maybe try posting a question in the "Bacon" forum with some details on what you have and what you would like to accomplish and I bet you will get some real good advice on the best way to do it.

Hello Tim.  My oven comment was just for fun.  If folks want to take it seriously, yes it will work.  BUT who would smoke in their oven??  As I said air flow is required.  Leave the oven door ajar for O2 but this is silly isn't it?  The smoke and CO2 in your house is not a good idea, but you knew that.  This post has been copied.  Good luck my friend.  Keep Smokin!

KC, evening.....  Well, around here we make an honest attempt at providing accurate and helpful information to folks asking questions....

Getting honest and sincere help is why they are here....

Are you copying your post for proof you are screwing with members that need honest and sincere help ??????

How about not posting cr@p..... How about posting stuff that will help members, and answer questions with honesty and sincerity ....

Maybe there is some where in Newark on Trent, United Kingdom you can practice your comedy routine....   I, for one, do not appreciate the way you play with members at their expense.....  No one likes being made the object of a joke....  If you need help finding "The Comedy Palace" in your area, I'm sure a good search engine will be invaluable....

But you said it would work if the oven was vented outside so I don't think you made the comment "in fun"!
How many AMNPS's do you own or have ever used?
If you want to post inaccurate comments and then turn around and say it was just "in fun" to CYA we don't want that around here!

Most folks around here DO take posts very seriously!!! And when people new to smoking ask questions they want serious answers! When you make jokes on here it can really mislead people and that will not be tolerated and it will not continue!!!

can u use one in a bbq pro horizontal smoker or can you only use it in a electric and propane??
What are you planning on smoking? I saw bacon, but what temp and any other items?

I used mine to do some cheese in a modified Char-Griller. I have also used it to infuse a bit of other flavors in hot smoke, worked but did not get the other flavors too much. I think that was my fault and will try it again.

So Yes it will work, just may need to play with it a bit depending on what you are cooking.

I would not recommend anyone use it in their oven at home inside. Might set "The Boss" into a rage

with the smoke smell in the house. There are residential ovens that do vent outside and some stove hoods do as well. I just do not think they move enough air to properly get the smoke out. I have tried it at work and had little success with it, just had air flow issues due to them being air tight. But was able to get a small amount of smoke. Again I would not do this in my oven at home and would not recommend anyone do it.

I was going to try bacon and maybe summer sausage, But I have never done either so im totally lost..can you do it in a offset smoker without the amnps or will it get to hot..sorry for the stupid questions..lol

You can cold smoke in offset just using the AMNPS. W/ properly cured bacon , there is no need to hot smoke.

As for the summer sausage and bacon. There are a ton of great recipes on the site. Spend some time with the search bar and a nice beverage, then let your brain explode with the ideas you will find. Might need a drool cloth due to some great looking food. I can't say I know much about either other then it is yummy!!

I have seen a few ways on here to modify your off set smoker into a cold smoker. I have had mixed success with it. Other than the AMNPS the best way I had success with was to light a couple coals of charcoal and place them in a bed of chips. I have seen a couple ways that had the use of a soldering iron. I failed epiclly when I tried that way. It was all me and being a bit on the too many beverage side.......
