Last week, I had to replace the stock Traeger controller with a Pellet Pro.
I also was using Royal Oak charcoal pellets for the first time in quite awhile.

I was running around 275, and lowered the temp down to around 180 and then shut it down.

I got burn back, big time.

Next time, I lowered the temp even lower, and got burn back again.

I wasn't sure if this was caused by the different controller, the charcoal pellets or both.
So yesterday I loaded it with some "normal" pellets.
First @ 225 - shutdown with no burn back.
Next @ 375 - no burn back (I didn't lower the temp before shutdown)
Final @ 425 - no burn back

So... it would seem that it's the pellets causing this.
Has anybody else noticed anything like this??

I never used straight charcoal pellets always mixed them with something else, and never had any issues…

I didn’t measure it out, but approximately 50:50
I'll have to play around with this as soon as I can find charcoal pellets again.
They seem to be unavailable everywhere at the moment.

Of course, with the temperature dropping, I'll be using
the Smokey Mountain with real charcoal very soon.

I've used Pit Boss charcoal pellets mixed in without issue , but the SmokeFire is a drop auger style . So low risk of burn back . I seemed to get a lot of embers in places they should not be though .

I fired up the 14 " today . I forgot how much fun it is to use .

I've had burn back of sorts a few different ways with my Smokefire. For me it's accumulation of dust that gets ignited. A quick blast of compressed air clears it all fast. No need to remove anything either.

I thought the auger tube was clean, but I'll have to look closer.
But again, can't find any 100% charcoal pellets at this time anywhere.

I'll be cooking a Butterball turkey breast on the 18" later today
Nice . I woke up thinking about what I could throw on mine today .
I fired it up yesterday , settled in around 350 . Closed 2 bottom vents , left one bottom and the lid open .
I did 2 hunks of pork loin ,

and a small bottom round roast .

Did the pork first , then put the beef on . It ran steady around 300 for 5 hours , and was still going strong when I took the beef off .
