building a smoker/grill

I am building a smoker/grill, the tank is 18"across and 36" long, i am having a hard time trying to find out what size my fire box should

be,  Is there any one out there can help me. I have looked at all the figures and tried the math but it dose not look right.

Firebox's are usually 1/3 the volume of the cooking chamber, with some builders going up to 50% of cc volume.
