Hi all,

I am brand new to smoking. I live in western Canada and smoking meat isn't too common up here, although it is all I eat when I'm down in Texas visiting my wifes family. I've been grilling my whole life and right now have a Vermont Castings grill. I try to use the smoke box on the grill, but it just isn't the same at all. I just bought a Masterbuilt propane smoker this week and am waiting for Fathers day to actually receive it from my 1 year old son. I hope to learn a bit here before Fathers day, just so my first try is not a total disaster.

Well I guess my wife must be getting hungry, it seems that fathers day got moved ahead to today!! I unpacked my new Masterbuilt XL and everything was well packed and looked great. No dents or missing pieces. Took me about 15 minutes to put it all together with no problems. All the bolts lined up just fine. Of course a few of the welds look a bit cheap, but for the cost of the unit I'm not about to complain about it. Door seems to be nice and tight, so in short I'm a happy guy.

Now to hook up the propane and get the smoker seasoned and figure out a recipe for a couple of chickens for tomorrow.

Welcome Bart!

I started off back in 2007 on this forum in the same situation.  I got an early Father's Day present from my wife and kids and it was a propane smoker.

It was so easy to use and immediately got me hooked.  Just season it well and go light on the smoke for your first few times and you'll be golden.

Hi Bart, welcome! I'm just north of you a bit in Calgary (well actually just east of Calgary in Langdon) and have been smoking for about 10 years on and off. I use stick/wood/charcoal fired offset vertical smoker. Am happy to share any knowledge I have as well as any local knowledge I've acquired since being here (last 7 years).
