Is there anything worse than spending all day with your smoker, giving its contents TLC and it turns out like crap? I had such a day on Saturday and I'm putting the blame on the new rub I tried. It had to be 80% salt! I felt like a deer with a salt lick at dinner. It was terrible and the company I had invited to impress had to suffer as well. So, I guess this is a huge testiment to making your own rub. I bought the rub at Cabelas and now realize that I should have at least read the ingredients in order of percentage. AND, to make it even worse, I had to listen to the patronizing, "It's not that bad" from everyone.

When testing store bought rub, taste the rub plain first.
I've learned this the hard way too....
Or, yea, make your own. Better luck next time.

"It's not that (bad, dry, fishy, gamey, spicy, bland, burnt, red inside, cold, and yes, salty)" have to be some of the biggest bullets out there. Every time someone shoots one at you to make you feel better it just make you feel the opposite.

The good news is that now you get to do it again. Maybe twice! Twice? Sure, try your new rub on your own first, and THEN invite over for the 2nd "confirmed" trial.

I learned that lesson (twice now- I'm a bit slow sometimes

) when I made a fish dish without trying it first

and then some meatballs that just HAD to be good, but again,

. Now I try it first lol.

lol I taste everything as I cook.
Occasionally if I've got a mate round you get: 'YOU JUST ATE RAW MEAT !'
'well duh !, how else am I supposed to know what it tastes lik ? '
lol

It got worse. After everyone left, there I was at the sink trying to scrub the outter layer of meat off as if I could salvage it. I don't accept defeat easily.

You can buy Jeff's rub. It's not too salty. The link is at the top of the page.

I always make my own. Its alot of fun trying new tastes. Makes the wife mad, cuz she gets to sneezin alot. I try to make it out in the garage. I usually make 2-3 lbs up at a time!

Some day in the future, you look back at it and laugh, and so will your friends!

I thin we all been there buddy. My run with my apple rub was bout like that, was alright, but certainly not my best. It's always a learnin curve. Ifin I'm invitin folks over, I use my tried an trusted only. I save the experimentin fer me an momma.

There ain't no such thin a bad Q, there be good Q, great Q an holly c**p that be fine Q.

Yall just gained some valuable knowledge there.

Hope yer next run be more ta yer likin!

Boy I can feel your pain. Mine snaffu was with BB Ribs. I finally was happy with my rub so I finally broke down and bought some highly expensive BB. Lined all my relatives up to show them how far I had come. While making my rub I seen Lowry's salt in the cupboard so I swapped it out with th normal salt. My thought being season it would add more flavor. So baby sit them ribs all the way to the dinner table. Everyone ooooo and ahhhhhhh they like them came right out of a magazine. Picture perfect. Then the dreaded taste test SALLLLLLLTTTTTTYYYYYYYYYY cow lick style. I could have crawled under the table. About a month later I learned about enhanced meat. I was to embarresed to discuss it in any forums. lol They was sooooooo bad the neighbors dog stopped coming over to lay in wait in front of my smoker. So don't beat yourself up it happens more then we all know.

Or want to admit.

My first several smokes were pretty awful. Ain't turned out anything that the dog wouldn't eat yet but then she eats cat crap so her opinion doesn't count for much.
