I have a MES 30 variant from Lowes. I don't know the generation but this is what it looks like inside: https://mobileimages.lowes.com/product/converted/094428/094428271777_08325619.jpg

Where would the best place to put the AMNPS maze be? I am currently putting it on the bottom rack inside an aluminum pan with another aluminum pan directly on top of it, causing two of my racks to be used for it.

I've read conflicting reports on whether or not the chip loading tube should be fully inserted, partially inserted, or completely removed... Does anyone know the best setup for my model? Should I be leaving the chip loading tray inside, putting it out 1-2 inches, or removing it completely for more airflow?

Hi there and welcome!

I'm sure someone will be along soon to give u a good answer.

I don't own an MES30 but I've helped a number of guys who did and IF they couldn't get the AMNPS tray to stay lit in their MES30's (it can be the case with MES30s). So they went the Mailbox Mod route and it solved all their AMNPS problems with the MES30.

If you don't get any workable or acceptable solutions you may wanna check into the Mailbox Mod idea.

I hope this gives some more food for thought :)

I don't think I have any issues keeping the AMNPS lit. My first smoke with it turned out decent and it was pumping out smoke for hours without issue. I just don't think it's very efficient to use two cooking racks to use it...

Yeah that kinda sucks to use up and dirty those racks. There are other advantages to doing a Mailbox Mod like being able to cold smoke and having an easier time keeping the pellets going. Also you never have to open the smoker to fool with the pellets thereby not letting heat escape :)

I have a mes30. And I try to put it on the bottom rack as often as I can and just put a foil tent over it to stop drippings form getting to it and catching on fire (don’t ask me how I figured that out haha). I’ve also put it on a rack above the meat and still believe it produces enough smoke to fill the box. Also if you have issues with it staying lit like I did someone here recommended To leave the tube that you add chips in halfway out to allow better air flow and it worked great
