My company is sending me to Denver in September to work a carshow. The show is in Westminster. Are there any good BBQ joints around there? Good, not fancy. We also will be heading down to Loveland for the Good guys show for one day.

kawboy, I noticed you live in CENTRAL MN.  So I don't know if you are planning on going south on I-35 to I-80 or not.

But even if it is 75-100 miles out of your way, this will be worth it, for the best BBQ you've ever had.

Go out of your way is necessary, and stop at Smokey D's BBQ in Des Moines, IA.

I guarantee you will also go out of your way back home, also, just to hit that joint again.  IT'S THAT GOOD!!!!

SMOKEY D'S BBQ

 Go South on I-35 S.

Take EXIT 135 - toward Hospital/IA-415/2ND Ave/Polk City.

Turn right onto NW 2ND St/IA-415. ( you want to go North on 415)  (If you reach I-80 W you've gone about 0.3 miles too far. do a flip flop)

About 1/2 to 1 block North of freeway, on the right, is Smokey D's BBQ, 5055 NW 2ND AVE.  (Turn Right on NW 2ND Ave, then left immediately, into parking lot)

(If you reach NW 50Th Pl while on IA-415, you've gone a little too far. Do a flip flop.  I did.)  LOL

Here is Smokey D's BBQ website link (if allowed)

Their menu posted online is not all they have.  They have a large menu board, and you can pick and choose.  Took my wife and I about 20 minutes  to view the trophies, and 20 minutes to make up our minds on our orders.  We ordered differently so we could sample as much as we could from both our plates.   MAN, It's ALL GOOD!!!

You'll appreciate the walk of fame to the bathrooms down a hall.  LOL

Lined with BBQ trophy's!  It cool.

Not a fancy place at all.  Plain wood tables, but great servers, and "over the top" food. at reasonable prices.  Walk in, stare at menu board, pick and choose your meal items, walk to counter and order.  Get your own drinks, go sit down and they bring your order out to you.  It's a wonderful place!  Service was quick too.  Don't skip the sides either.  They are just as good as the Q!

I can agree even though I have not been to on of Darren's restaurants. He's been to my neck of the woods multiple times for competitions and everyone says he's a wonderful guy. Very polite the time I met him back in may and a VERY good competition cook. He has multiple restaurants.

I can't praise that place enough.  He has got it nailed down tight!

My wife and I were very impressed and amazed that the quality, texture and flavor of their food.

1st time we stopped, it was on our way to Colorado, and was lunch time.  Busy, but didn't have to wait for table.  Our biggest wait was in deciding what to order.  We spent a few minutes at the menu board.  Also asked the counter person a few questions, and were treated very friendly as she explained some things.  We enjoyed our very big lunch, and went on our way.

2ND time we stopped was two weeks later, and it was evening dinner time.  Same great service and friendly staff.  Same consistent excellent BBQ.  It was exactly the same as two week earlier!   Consistency was what what impressed us the most, along with quality of food.

It was EXACTLY THE SAME as 2 weeks early, even though at different time of day!

And no matter what else you order... make sure to order some Burnt Ends!  I've never even came close yet at home to those.  I did make ribs once, that I would put side by side with Smokey D's, but I can't replicate them too often like that.

You won't be sorry you stopped, and as you live much closer than we do to them, I bet you will take a drive a couple times of year, just to hit them again.
