I wanted to make this for the ground beef throwdown, but I was too late and did not necessarily feel this would have qualified. Nevertheless, I wanted to post here to share.

Grilled and seared Italian sausage and ground beef to give char and BBQ flavor

Sauteed onions and garlic cooked with the meat in the cast iron.

Herbs, tomato paste, crushed tomatoes, and tomato sauce added in the dutch oven.

Finally, I would have smoked the lasagna. Between the char and smoke it may had qualified, but either way, it was tasty.

Looks tasty! I like the smoke and or char addition on nearly all recipes.

A random note: I noticed the lower fat beef did not char and sear as well as the higher fat sausage.

I would have guessed this was the case, but the lack of sear at the same temps and time was pretty surprising.

slap it with some spray oil. I bet that will help the sear factor.

Nice looking lasagna!

I second the idea of adding char or smoke to otherwise ordinary dishes. It takes it in a different direction and makes it seem almost exotic by daily standards.

The best chili and sloppy joes I have made were charred on the grill prior to transferring to the skillet or pot.
