I was riding through a small town the other day with a friend on the way to his hunting camp. I saw a billboard advertising a 2 day barbeque contest and wanted to go, but he was driving and opted to keep on the road. My question is, how exactly do these BBQ contests work. Is there a fee to get in, or is it free? Also, do the competitors sell their products after they are done? I want to go to the next one thats close enough and was just wondering what i should expect when I go. I'm sure they're all different, but someone has gotta have a little basic info. Thanks

Let me see if I can cover this fairly quick.
There are sanctioned and non-sanctioned events. Almost all charge an entry fee and pay out some type of prize.
Most charge admission to the public to be present. Generally to help provide revenue for the charity they are most likely sponsoring the event for.
After the event judging, many events have a people's choice. You buy tickets for say two bucks each. That lets you taste a vendors wares. Generaly half the money goes to the competitor and the other half to the sponsored charity. The competitor with the most tickets at the end of the event is the people's choice winner.
The two primary sanctioning organizations are the Kansas City Barbeque Society and the International Barbeque Cookers Association. They sanction and judge the events.
Hope that helps a little on how it works most of the time.

Attending a comp is also a good opportunity to get to know and ask questions of the cookers who are in attendance. Sometimes if there is no peoples choice your "parking fee" will get you some samples of the cookers wares. It's a good time to checkout what everyone is cooking on and seeing if anything looks like it something you might want to own. Good luck on finding your next comp.

Well put!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the info and the link. I looked at a bunch of those pictures from the events and read a bunch of Mr Grumpy's logs about the comps. I had no idea how intense these things were. I gotta find the next one i can make it to and go for sure. They look like a really fun time and also, a great place to learn.

Great advice.....just stop in and take a look around. Like Desert Smokin said each one is differant depending on who is putting it on, and whether it is KCBS santioned or not. This was are first year competing and let me tell you we had a great time but it was a HUGE learning curve. Met mant wonderfull folks and learned alot.

Skinner,

Here are the dates (so far) for the FL BBQ ASSN contests in 08. I know it isn't close to Jax, but I will be cooking at the Sebring contest in January and you are more than welcome to come and hang out (bring beer LOL) if you would like.

Joe,

Thanks for the list. Looks like some good comps in '08. Sebring is a pretty good haul, but it may work out. Id like to help if I could im pretty good in the kitchen (food and resource major) and i also enjoy "hanging out" if you know what i mean. Ha, thanks again.
