Ft Lauderdale.
I think I already know the answer but here goes. Lately. it seems the B&B briquettes i got at Wally World malfunctioned. I bought a Sh&t-mess when it was on sale in the spring. I kinda turned into a B&B convert.
Recently the chrcoal doesn't seem to be "catching" as it burns thru the minion pile. I don't have indoor storage for my open bags due to Jeep & quadrunner and a whole garage full of crap. My patio is completely covered and nothing underneath gets direct rain. With the economy the way it is, I quash out my WSM to "save" any unburnt Coals. Is it possible for briquettes to "absorb" humidity cause we got some down here in S Florida. I got a purdy batch of Baby backs to do tomorrow and will be trying Blue bag Professional. left over briquettes taken from last cook look like in picture. That's all.....carry on.

Charcoal and wood pellets are greatly affected by high relative humidity (RH).
In Florida, I keep both inside
Here in Minnesota I keep both in the garage.
I snuff out and reuse my lump all the time. I can tell when the RH has been high as it takes a long time to get the mix of used and new lump fully lit in the chimney.

I've noticed that B&B burn and lite slower than other brands. Maybe if they retained a little moisture that would have put them over the top for the minon method. If your starting you WSM with partially ashed over briquettes, maybe you want to try fully ashed over to start. You may also need to oper your vents a little more.

I also bought a ton when they were on sale. I store mine in the garage. Haven't had any issues with them lighting in chimney or in the kettle. I don't do the minion with them though.

Might just be a briquette thing. I live in very low humidity and have recently started buying BluesHog briquettes and am noticing the same thing. They still work fine but don’t burn as thurough as B&B used to. Idk

Don't like B&B at all. Royal Oak for me.
Interesting, I always found quite a bit of scrap in the RO although that was lump. I did just buy 8 bags of RO briquettes super cheap to use for starting Lang up. What I'm really digging for the price right now is B&B Competition Char Logs. Much cheaper than lump and burns long and hot. Love them.

I use Rockwood for lump.

Well, as to not take up space on the home page. Did my slab of babys, using Kinsford professional. First obsrevance was how small the briquettes were. They were very dense though.
Did quasi minion method( no coffee can but a 4" circle in the middle of a 2/3 full charcoal ring.
1/2/ chimney blazing. dumped in the middle. added chunks(apple)
temp worked up tp 250-/260. seemed to level off. closed bottom vents to and small pencil crack open. Took a beer nap. Alarm went off on inbird for high temp. woke to 300 grate level.
looked in door and ALL briquettes were white hot and ashed. closed bottom vents a little and put top back. crept back up to 300. not wanting to toast the slab removed top and ribs and closed vents. put back when temp was 260.
time elapsed in total. 4 hours. Water bowl was full at start of cook.
Temp slowly went down to 275.
probed ribs until temp hit 190 int.
So it worked out, but I thinks those briquettes burned real hot (or i put too much)
Its frustrating as I have many cooks on the 18.5

I agree Jeff the Char Logs are my favorite too. Just can't get the local ACE to keep them in stock.....yet.
Long lasting and super clean burn. They work great in the MBGF.
