I'm planning on rebluing a couple older double barrels and was wondering if anyone here was into this as a hobby or profession.

I'll be using Brownells Classic rust blue and will be going by their instructions, but if anyone has a tip or two I'd love to hear them before I start, not after

Also the first guinea  pig will be an older side by side that has a high nickel content, will this present more problems? Just thought Id throw it out there , we do have a diverse group here so I thougtht I'd ask

Thanks, Dan

Clean it very well, use denatured alcohol or the like and make sure you do not touch the metal with bare hands (oil in your fingers) I would remove all of the wood and anything you don't want blued.  Good luck and follow the instructions!

Hi Dan..

AzRon says a lot, classlessness and preparation are important for a good outcome as well as consistent temperature, Materials with a high nickle content are more challenging to get consistent results on.

I've got the toolbox vers. of "Machinery's Handbook" 20th edition, the latest word,..37 years ago....

but it has a great section of procedures to Taylor various bluing,  oxide and dying techniques to obtain consistent results.

It will take a day or so but I'll get this scanned, enlarged, can send it as a .pdf or any format you prefer..

It's just in a .6 type face, damn near invisible to me.

Thanks for the offer Awopaho7, I'd Love to read it.

been researching some more and from what I understand the fumes from the acids will damage any metal in the room and need warm humid conditions. It sounds like Ill be waiting till summer, or build an enclosure with exhaust, and a damp box to rust it in.

The best advice I can give you is CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN. I clean them at least twice with acetone, and wear gloves, changing the rags frequently. Another tip before you try on on guns use some scrap metal and practice, then get an elchepo and do that. I also recommend you either do it outside or at the very least in the garage with the door open. Wouldn't want you to get in trouble with the wife like I did
