Howdy Group,

Wanted to get into the roll call and say Hey to everyone !!

Wasn't sure if i was supposed to create a new thread to do it, but i couldn't find one that said 'All new people go here and put your info in".

My name is Rob, but you can call me RB. I live just outside Toronto, Ontario, Canada and have been a lifelong bbq'er.

My Dad used to bbq everything to well done,  and as a kid i just wasn't a fan of char. So I quickly learned that in order to get me some medium rare, it would be up to me to do the work. "Here Dad, let me do the bbq'ing and you sit down and rest - can i get you another beer ?"

As to hardware, I'm still hanging onto my 16 year old Weber Genesis 3000 LP, even though we just got a brand new Napoleon - P 450 RSIBNSS in Natural gas. I am a HUGE fan of the Weber, and i hope the Napoleon is just as good.

I have done more than a couple of refurbs on the weber over time, and it was time to do another one this summer. But as a member of Direct Buy, they were offering a clearance of sorts on the Prestige 450's and i couldn't resist the price. Also, we moved into a new house last fall and it came with a natural gas line ( the previous owner left an old Flame Pro bbq hooked up to it ) He told me they used it to bbq corn on the cob while they did everything else on propane.

So, long story long, the weber is on its way out and we will move onto the Napoleon as soon as i get a gas guy in to switch the gas line. People have been telling me that LP burns hotter than NG and i will have to adjust cooking times to that.

Plus my weber smoker box thats fits perfectly over the flavour bars, will have no place in the new Prestige. But i will search the forums for replacement info.

I also entered the Smoking world last fall, by purchasing the cool Jim Beam Bradley 4 rack smoker - BTDS76JB. As a control freak, this one is perfect for me as there are digital controls for temp, time and smoke. I get exactly what i want every time - even if i'm not right. Plus it turns out to be pretty idiot proof - which also helps me when we get into double digit beer consumption.......

A couple of things i am here to research ( in no particular order ) are recipes / wood types / digital thermoters / Napoleon accesories.

Ok, so that's me. I look forward to meeting you all and learning and hopefully contributing a bit to this forum.

Happy Smoke Trails

RB

Thanks to Dave, Scar and Alesia for the warm welcome.

Going to smoke a few chickens this weekend as per the latest Jeff newsletter.

Still searching for a long lasting, top notch digital thermometer. Nothing i hate worse than getting all geared up to smoke, and the frickin

thermometer shows no reading from the probe. They just don't seem to last very long. And no, i don't think i'm too tough on them. I wipe the wire to clean it as gently as i can.

What kind of therms have you used?

Not 100% sure Dave. The first one i ever found up here was from PC Grocery store ( which is President's Choice - a spawn from Loblaws ) It had the grocery store logo on it, so i wasn't

able to see who the actual manufacturer was.

My 2nd one didn't even last half way through one cook. It was a beautiful, super, special birthday Prime Rib Roast - the thermo shut off a couple of times and also stopped registering any temp from the probe. It still rests somewhere out in the forest among the Jack Pines. Never knew the brand.

My current one wouldnt fire up for the pork butt 2 weeks ago, so i am on the hunt for a 'good' one.

It should probably be noted that there aren't a ton of bbq stores or places for all the goodies up in these parts. I currently go to Bass Pro for all my bbq / smoker needs.

They're the only ones who sell the Jack Daniels wood chips that i love.......

welcome RB, I understand, my thermometer craped out on me this weekend! but it gives you an excuse to buy a new one!
Thanks Marty. You are correct. There is always a positive to pull from the negative.

Get to go shopping for a new one !!!

Do you know which one you are going to get ? I have seen a ton of mentions on here for Maverick.

p.s. fine looking lad on your avatar !

Thanks, Grandson,

Because of the forum I am looking at a Maverick, I am also looking at a BBQ Guru digi Q DX2, which would probably make the Thermometer

pretty much useless, but i'll get one in the interum!

A very popular therm is the Maverick Redi Check. There are 2 good models and both have 2 probes, 1 for the meat temp and 1 for your smoker temp. They also have a remote so you can monitor the temps from inside the house or elsewhere, ET-732 and ET-73. I have had the 73 for almost a year now and use it almost every weekend and have had no problems with it. The 732 is an upgraded version which has a better range, up to 100'. One of our forum sponsors sells the ET-732 and has it on sale right now and I believe he ships to Canada: http://www.amazenproducts.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=MAVET-732
