being that im a total new guy to the smoke house builds. i reading and searching and i'm not sure if maybe i was not using the right words or what? i was reading some of your guys builds and found the BBQ Pit Builder Calculator, extremely helpful. which help lead me my design idea....mostly build out rock, brick, etc...

my main questions

1. what is the length of pipe (or formula) from the firebox to the cook house?

2. can i use the fire box to apply heat to cook?

or

3. should i attach a source of heat to the cook house and only use the firebox as a source of smoke/light heat?

i have attached a picture of my build idea please have at it. what do i need to do different? my main use is to cook for family events/parties, etc... nothing commercial just wanting to have a nice smokehouse.

thanks for your help.

You will loose so much heat with that setup
What do you plan on using this for?
If you are looking to cook with this setup. I would ditch the pipe and butt the firebox right up to the cooking chamber

this whole idea, started from a hunting camp i went to. that camps smokehouse build up was similiar to my sketch up. they kept throwing wood into one area (not a lot, just so often) which i assumed is the firebox and then there was a pipe that was about 5'-6' in length from there to the cooking house part, i assmumed the pipe was the transport of low heat? and smoke. i never really looked inside the cooking house part to see if there was a burner or fire/heat source. but the food pulled out was some of the best i have tasted!!....lol

i assumed heat would be lost between the two with the pipe, thats why i was wondering of other options; looking at my design posted--- if i attached to the backside another fire box to the cooking house for higher obtainable heat or simply maybe a propane burner inside and use the other distant firebox via the pipe for low heat and smoke? or looking at my design posted i wonder if having the fire box simply one foot away would matter? and no other heat source?

i have no problems butting it up against the cooking house part, i was just trying to go with a different design/ idea.

i know what i want may not work and simply i should take the drive towards Tulsa again and look more into detail of the smoke house i seen. i know i will have to go with what works, just trying a little something different compared to rest of my other friends cookers.

thanks, for the help......
