Starting this thread to chronical the build of my RF smoker.

I would like to thank Dave as his calculator has been a great resource for planning my build. Before I get to cutting and fabricating I do have one question for the community.

Using Dave's calculator my firebox should be 4976.29 cubic inches. As long as i keep the FB to CC opening the correct size will it hurt at all to make the firebox slightly larger?

Thanks in advance.

No, an oversized fire box won't hurt a bit. I built mine a bit longer than originally planned so I could use my firewood in the smoker if need be. Throw some pictures at us. We love to see other builds.

Will do! At this point I just have all the brackets cut off the tank, so I'll take some update pictures today.

Small update:

Haven't had a lot of time to work on the CC but here are some pic's of what I have so far. I have been spending a lot of time reading other build post's and double checking the numbers. I'm really glad I found this forum before I started the build. More pics to follow as things get done.

Hoping to get a quick opinion before I cut the door, see if this looks to be good. Goes from about 11:50 to about 3:20.

Looks good to me. Don't recall how others did it, but I left the corners attached until I had hinges installed. That door may be heavy enough to need a counterweight. Go poke around in the "build" section for ideas. There are some pretty creative fab guys on here.

Got a little spare time at work today to work on the frame for the fire box. The first picture is the upper and lower frame for the fire box. The second picture is the lower frame with the first 2 rails installed for the fire grate. I left 4" below the grate for an ash pan and for good air flow to the fire. Hopefully tomorrow I will have time to cut the rest of the frame and finish getting it tack welded together.

Progress Update:

Finally got the parts in for the blast cabinet. So the bottom and top frame for the fire box spent some quality time in the blaster. Then I finished the frame for the fire grate. I then was able to use some metal walkway that was salvaged from who knows where to make the fire grate. Progress has been slow on the build but that is the nature of working on it when I have time at work. I am thankful that my job lets us use do things like this. The first cook once it's done is going to be for the guys in the lab. Hoping tomorrow to get the uprights for the firebox cut and finish weld everything in place.
