Grilling 365 - 24 Reasons to Barbeque Year Round

365.jpg
Wherever you are in the world, barbequing is an activity that needs no justification. But that doesn’t change the fact that many of the customary times to fire up the grill also seem to coincide nicely with major events – 4[sup]th[/sup] of July, Presidents’ Day, Labor Day, Christmas (if you’re in the Southern Hemisphere) and birthdays, just to name a few. This is no surprise as generally, the 2 main contributing factors to a successful BBQ event are good weather and collective time off.

However, between these universally acceptable grill times, there is a world of opportunity… countless reasons to grab some briquettes and go for it. And while we still believe that, “Because it’s Tuesday” is adequate enough reason to get grilling, sometimes your guests need a little more convincing. Here’s a list of (completely legitimate) lesser-recognized special days that all provide valid reasons to throw a barbeque party:

January 8 - Elvis’ Birthday. What better way to honor the King’s special day than with a mountain of cheeseburgers? Your guests will say a-thank-you… a-thank-you very much…

January 10 - 1984, Wendy’s spokesperson Clara Peller first uttered the iconic phrase, “Where’s the beef?” This one’s kind of a no-brainer.

February 1 - Fred Flintstone’s Birthday. Everyone’s favorite Jurassic-era man’s man, Fred may well have been the original carnivore. Pay some tribute to the discovery of fire and yabbadabbadoo it caveman-style.

February 10 - 1957, the Styrofoam cooler was invented. And while we’ve moved on to greener, more biodegradable solutions, let’s salute one of the first really useful additions to the barbecue accessory family.

March 9 - 1981, The US Department of Agriculture declares ketchup a vegetable… a vegetable that’s been part of the barbeque show from day-1. If Johnny Carson was a grill, think of this as ‘Ed McMahon Day’.

March 27, 28 and 29 - 3 of Liz Taylor’s wedding anniversaries. Anyone who can parlay marital dysfunction into a 3-day weekend deserves a party in her honor.

April 15 - The bottle opener is invented. Enough said.

April 19 - ‘Reading is Fun’ Week begins. The nerdiest new event on the Christian calendar surely deserves some grill-oriented counter-measures…

May 5 - 1939, the world’s largest pig, ‘Big Boy’ is born at a whopping 1,905 pounds. Chops, anyone?

May 21 - Mr. T’s birthday. I pity the fool who doesn’t own a barbeque.

June 16 - 1846, the first ever game of baseball. What better day to grill ballpark-style dogs?

June 27 - 1947, the first flying saucer was spotted over US skies. You won’t find a better night to grill under the stars!

July 5 - 1945 - the bikini made its debut on the runways of Paris. Bikinis, July, barbeque… just saying…

July 16 - The safety pin is invented. (Sorry, July’s a little light on events)

August 8 - 1992, the All-American Polka Festival kicked off in Vernon, New Jersey. Can you say bratwurst?

August 31 - 1966, The Beatles make their last concert appearance. You’ll have as hard a time finding someone who doesn’t like the Fab Four as you will finding someone who doesn’t like barbequing. Coincidence?

September 18 - 1928, Adam West was born. Happy Birthday, Batman.

September 27 - 1950, the answering machine was invented. Call your friends and leave them all voicemail invites to your barbeque.

October 3 - 1988, a 327 gallon Pina Colada became the world’s largest cocktail. See where this is going?

October 19 - The Virgin Islands ‘End of Hurricane Season’ celebration. As good a day as any to defy the elements and break out the barbeque for some mid-Fall madness!

November 10 - 1969, Sesame Street debut on American television. “Today’s show is brought to you by the letters B, B, and Q and the number Heinz 57.”

November 12 - 1745, Ireland invents the Happy Hour. Add a grill to the equation and you might convince the whole office to knock off early…

December 1 - 1966, the Pope declares that Catholics are allowed to consume meat on Fridays except during Lent. Bonus points for throwing your party on a year that this anniversary actually falls on a Friday…

December 7 - 1963, the first instant replay was used during a sporting event… and as the Game and the Grill became friends, male-kind made the first fleeting steps towards multi-tasking…
