Hey all,

First post here. I've been reading around for quite a while and used Daveomak's calculator to come up with the following design (in-progress) for my first build. I deviated from the calculator in the following ways:
  • Opted for a 132% firebox.
  • Opted for a 3.5" x 25" exhaust instead of the recommended 3" x 36". The reason is 36" just seemed too tall of a stack above the cooking chamber. I wasn't able to find any commercially available cookers with such a tall stack.
  • Opted for a 17" inlet vs the recommended 11.3", since this is adjustable.
What do you guys think? For those curious, here are all the dimensions.

Looks good.... If I may suggest.... keep an extra 12" length of exhaust stack handy... have tabs welded inside and out so it can be slipped on the top of the existing stack... and won't fall off.. You may find the temps from end to end of the cooking grates are too far apart for your liking... set the extension on top of the stack...
The exhaust stack is an important part of the engine that drives the pressure differential across the smoker... drives the "suck", so to speak...
Alien and friends measured many, many smokers... quantitatively determined their performance and did comparisons against dimensions... sounds like stuff I do in my sleep... anyway, their collective consensus determined..... 30-40", above the top of the Cook Chamber, gave the best results...
I'm well aware of the few folks that swear by a 25" exhaust stack... with no facts.... appearance only....
Sounds like you know him....
Anyhow, that's neither here nor there...
If you have any additional questions.... I'm here..

Dave
