Finally had the chance to take some photos of it in the backyard. It of course rained like crazy so there is some surface rust I will have to clean up before I can season it, but oh well.
Overall a lot of fun and I am already looking forward to my next build.
Thank you! I am looking forward to getting it unloaded today. As my wife was leaving this morning she had to come back in and comment on the monstrosity in the back of the truck. For some reason "it looks like it belongs in a Mad Max movie" makes me very happy.
It looks fantastic. Going to cook some delicious meat on there. I am curious, how much are you into it for the build? Raw material, parts, etc. Did you plan the build and pick everything up before starting? Or was it partially leftover material you had laying around the shop from previous...
Here is the newest smoker a buddy and I have built. Sadly I didn't get as many pictures as I should have. I am unloading it tomorrow, so I will take some more. It is made from an old Ingersoll Rand compressor tank I salvaged back when I was a millwright. The diameter is 24" and it is a 120gal...
Looks like a purchased part. Hard to tell from pictures but I imagine that is laser cut. There is etching on them in the photos as well. I think they are from LavaLock? A little hard to make out the lettering while squinting at my screen.
Looks like there would be about 79 pierces on their plasma table then bent at a press brake then welded. Between that and the thickness that is actually a damn good value. They likely have it in to the cheapest fab shop near them if it isn't made in-house. So while the welds do look pretty not...
So after the first test on the new setup, I decided some wings were in order. I played with filling up the grate to see how it would cook right next to the firebox. Held nicely at 250~ again. Seems to be where this setup likes to sit.
It spent about about 2 hours at that temp before I piled on...
Hard to say how much air is actually getting in through there. Mostly smoke coming out so I don't think there is enough draft in the cook chamber to really create a vacuum to pull much air in. I plan to put a 2'~ stack on in the next week or so, so we will see if that changes.
Looks fantastic! Definitely looking forward to more. If you ever want something laser cut feel free to hit me up. Handles, caster plates, standoffs, logos. I have access to metal, lasers and entirely too much interest in fabrication and cookers.
It was to be able to easily remove the firebox. I am planning a larger smoker build and I wanted to try using a modular firebox setup. Mostly to see how well it'd work, but it also saves time and material when fabricating.
So after recently finishing building an external firebox for my Weber I figured I'd do a pork loin to test it out. Seasoned liberally with Lawry's, coarse salt, coarse pepper, chipotle powder, and cayenne powder. I am definitely a fan of spicy pork, so the more heat the better.
Loin went on at...
Well, that was delicious. Cubed it up and had it with white rice. The rest will make for fantastic meal prepping. Took about 5 1/2 hours and held temp quite well. Once I get better at managing the fire in the box and work out the perfect split size this thing will be a monster. I think some...
Yeah, this thing is chugging right along in that range. I am playing with split sizes and logs vs chunks as I go to see what does what. It is always fun to find out.
Pork loin went on seasoned with Lawry's, coarse salt, coarse pepper, chipotle powder, chili powder and is currently at 180~ for a...
