First Smoker Build! 24" Pipe Plans Feedback

Looks like a great design! 24" diameter is a great size to work with. I'm a fan of the plenum, as it's easier to get my exhaust entrance at grate height, and will force the smoke to move across the entire length of the cook chamber. I also have more control in the transition from cook chamber...

Here's a video showing the steering mechanisms. If you google "Baja Wagon", "DIY Monster Wagon", etc you will also get some ideas for wheels and running gear. Steering Link Closeup And these are the wheels: Wheels

I cooked some tri-tips for the maiden voyage! The smoker drawed so nicely, and I got easy consistent temperatures. Thanks all for the smoker formulas from previous members they seemed to work great!

    Craftsman RF60 Build

Smoker is finished! I went with a wagon style system, using lawn tractor tires and rims. The rear wheels are fixed, and the front has a steering rack spindle system (similar to a go kart). Because I removed the paint, the tank was pretty shiny. I wanted it to patina but did not want to wait to...

Hah! Hey can’t argue with that!

Hey Lance, thanks for the compliment, they are square butt joints on 1/4” plate. The welder is turned up to get some extra penetration. A “V” bevel would have provided a flusher/stronger weld, but the structural requirement here is pretty minimal.

Thanks! Yes it’s way too heavy to lift off sooooo…. 😅

    Craftsman RF60 Build

Thanks for all the positive remarks so far on the thread. It’s helped me stay confident with the build! I added some lower and upper sliding vents on the door, as well as a latch assembly. I wanted the latch to engage at the top and bottom of the door for a nice seal. I also put a frame...

The firebox door is underway. I am planning to cut out horizontal sliding FB inlets, and place them on the top/bottom door. I warped the door a bit while welding, but fortunately it fit in my press to straighten things back out. I’ll probably re-enforce the inside of the door with a “X” strap to...

The exhaust manifold is done. The 4.5” exhaust stack in the pictures is for a visual/fit up only.

Next up is the RF plate. I incorporated a drain, which runs down a pipe to the bottom of the smoker. The plate is level across the length of the cook chamber. However it is sloped to the center between the front to back. In the middle is an angle iron channel which is sloped towards the drain...

    Craftsman RF60 Build

Today I cleaned up the cap on the FB side of the tank, so I can prep it for welding. So that involved stripping paint, grinding previous compressor mounts smooth, and getting rid of an inlet port from a previous air hose fitting. I could have just left the port but it was in a weird spot, and...

    Craftsman RF60 Build

Now this is a part I’ve been looking forward to. Joining the CC and firebox. Drawing and cutting straight lines on a round surface is hard for me. So I enlist the help of my laser level to make things easy (one of my favorite tools). Per @daveomak ’s recommendation, I brought the FB in past the...

The firebox is a proper 1/4” thick plate. I think it’s around 20x17x17 (need to double check). It’s a little big for this cook chamber, but more/less follows the formulas from the sticky thread. I cut out the half moon according to the RF FB/CC recommendations. I though the long radius cut was...

I completed the door strapping and hinges here. First time needing to use the slip roller that was handed down to me. I think I was stressing the machine with this steel, as it was quite the workout. But it did the job! I was planning to stitch weld the straps, but there where gaps, so I...

    Craftsman RF60 Build

I decided to knock off all of the paint. I haven’t decided if I’m going to use high temp paint or boiled linseed oil, but I figured a clean bare surface would be good either way. I tried wire wheels which only scuffed the surface. I then tried my oxy torch which did help loosen the paint, but I...

    Craftsman RF60 Build

Hi all welcome to my 60 gallon build. I got this donor tank and I’m looking to build a simple RF smoker for my patio. I aspire to build a bigger cooker, and hoping to learn as much as I can with this build before investing into a bigger tank. I’ll be following the “how to build a reverse flow...

    Removing paint from donor tank

For anybody else that finds this, the stripper wheels will disintegrate if you use them on an edge. If you have a flat-ish surface, they last a surprisingly long time. On the edges of the door cut-out, I had to make sure the rotation was spinning away from the edge. Otherwise you can kiss your...

    Removing paint from donor tank

Thanks for the tips. I tried more flames, and wire wheels with little results. However, I ultimately got it off with 4" stripper wheels. I ate through 2 of them, and it took about 2 hours. The disks worked really well on whatever finish this was. The majority of the caps will be cut out, so I'll...
